Magpie, a local folk duo, worked with Librarian Laura Gagnon on a grant from The New York State Council on the Arts to allow the musicians to work in the Radez Library for an intensive songwriting workshop.
The song they wrote with 5th graders in Mrs. Osterhoudt’s class is about the beauty of the Schoharie Valley and preserving the environment for future generations. Students wrote about the perspective of animals from mountains, waterways, and forest habitats.
Our chorus to “Tread Lightly”, “Tread lightly and be mindful as you go, dream big, live long and take it slow” is not only a great philosophy on ecology but life in general. The creative power of our students, plus the focus from professional musicians, and guidance from their teacher was an amazing thing to be a part of.
