The Wrap Stars team from Golding Middle School took first place in the regional Jr. Iron Chef competition at SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday, March 30, and are the 2019 Junior Iron Chef Middle School Champions!
The 6th grade team placed first among 14 teams, representing nine counties in the middle school division. The members of the Wrap Stars are Sophia Ruenes, Alexandra Palmer, Taylor Trendell, and Christina Bradt.
In addition to making the championship-winning recipe of Cuban black beans and rice wrap with vegetables, avocados, and a Chilean cilantro sauce, the team also had to create a poster board display and give a presentation describing their dish to the judges.
Jr. Iron Chef (JIC) is a competition for teams of regional middle and high school students to develop and cook healthy recipes using a combination of local and USDA/Commodity Foods. The annual event is sponsored by SUNY Cobleskill, the Bassett Research Institute 5-2-1-0 Initiative, and the Rural Health Education Network of Schoharie, Otsego and Montgomery counties (RHENSOM).
