Sophomore Madelyn Weiss earned first place in the American Legion Oratorical Contest at the zone-level competition held at Lake George High School this past Saturday, February 3.

Madelyn faced juniors and seniors from as far as St. Regis and Clinton County.

Madelyn had to deliver an eight- to ten-minute oration on the citizen’s responsibility toward the Constitution with an additional three- to five-minute extemporaneous speech on an amendment.   No microphones, visual aids, or podiums were allowed.  The title of Madelyn’s oration is “Freedom is Not Free.”

The win allows Madelyn to compete at the state level on Saturday March 3.

Several legionnaires made the journey to cheer Madelyn on.

Madelyn has already won at the county level and placed second at the district level.  If Madelyn wins at the New York State Competition she earns the right to compete in the National Championship in Indianapolis, Indiana in April.

Good luck Madelyn!
