C-R graduation rate increases 7 points, tops NY State average

Cobleskill-Richmondville’s graduation rate climbed from 73 percent in 2015 to 80 percent in 2016, according to data released by the State Education Department.

The number of Regents and Advanced Regents diplomas also rose during that same period.

The increase is predominantly due to the STRIVE program and the district’s Strategic Plan, says Superintendent Carl Mummenthey.

The STRIVE Program at C-RHS is alternative education program where students receive additional academic support and catch up on classwork. Introduced for the 2015-16 school year, the program has already made an impact on student performance.

“The STRIVE program has done an amazing job with our students that are just on the cusp of meeting their graduation requirements,” said C-RHS Principal Melissa Ausfeld. “It’s been my pleasure to see students succeed in that program, and I can’t give STRIVE Coordinator Danielle Hay enough credit for leading that program. She’s committed not just to the graduation rate, but to the success of those kids, whatever that looks like.”

Likewise, the district’s 3-year strategic plan has been instrumental in establishing the vision of graduating all students prepared to pursue their hopes and dreams.

“We set an ambitious goal for our graduation rate in our strategic plan,” says Mummenthey, noting the plan calls for the graduation rate to be 90 percent by 2019. “Seven points in one year is a big jump to make in graduation rate, and I believe that had we not set the bar that high in our strategic plan we wouldn’t have seen our rate increase as quickly as it has.”

Of course, no plan is successful without the hard work of the people implementing it.

“We have a wonderful group of caring, hard-working professionals in this district,” says Mummenthey. “I commend them for the work they do, every day, for the children of this district.”

Moving forward, Mummenthey says there will be continued support for at-risk students, and the development of a program similar to STRIVE at Golding Middle School.

He also cautions that numbers may fluctuate a bit in the upcoming years, “but we’re on the right trajectory and we have momentum.”
