Students learn about packaging recycling

recyclingMrs. Javitz’s eighth grade science class recently completed a research project learning about where the packaging from products we purchase go. Each research team was responsible for choosing a package (cereal box, gum package, video CD case, etc.), identifying all the materials in the package, describing the purpose of each material and what happens to each material after you throw it away.

Students created posters, which included their package’s materials, to present their research to their class. Many students found that the packages they chose were already made from recycled materials and were being recycled into another type of packaging.

On Thursday, Feb. 9, Mr. Roennpagel, Transfer Station Operator at the Amsterdam MOSA, spoke to the class about his job and the work done at MOSA.  Mr. Roennpagel told the students about how recyclables are handled, what types of recyclables are taken at MOSA, and the enormous volume of recyclables that MOSA received on a daily basis.
